There is no performance that marks Christmas quite like The Nutcracker. Perhaps the greatest venue to play host to the legendary ballet is the Bolshoi in Moscow. This theatre is so renowned for this particular performance, a feature film titled Bolshoi Ballet: The Nutcracker hit theaters back in 2014.

Choreographed by the famed choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, this world-class performance is a must for every visitor to or resident of Moscow. The story is the traditional one we all remember:

On Christmas Eve, Marie receives a strange toy from her godfather: a wooden nutcracker in the shape of a soldier. At midnight when everyone has gone to bed, the toy comes to life. The nutcracker becomes life-size and endeavors to save Marie, who has been kidnapped by the Mouse King and his army.

The story is not only one of the most timeless of the Christmas season, but also features the iconic music of Tchaikovsky, elegant costumes and elaborate sets. The tale focuses on the universal themes of love, power and evil.

Should The Bolshoi be too far afield, the performance will also be held at the London Coliseum with 100 English National Ballet dancers. Branded “dazzling” by The Daily Telegraph and “Christmas-card perfect” by The Guardian, the English rendition of this legendary Russian ballet more than holds its own.
